Guest Lecture – “Introduction to Pulp & Paper”

Resource Person – Dr. A.K. Dixit, Scientist – F and Head, Chemical Recovery & Biorefinery Division, Central Pulp & Paper Research Institute (CPPRI), Saharanpur.

The program was organized by the Department of Forestry, co-organized by the Department of Biochemistry, under the leadership of Dr. Gyanendra Awasthi. The organizing committee consisted of six members, including Dr. Anil Kumar Uniyal, Dr. Sandhya Goswami, Dr. Vikaspal Singh Rawat, Dr. Prabhakar Manori, Mr. Anil Kumar Kewat, and Mr. Manish Kumar.

Highlights of the lecture –The session provided an insightful discussion over the paper–making process, an essential part of the pulp and paper industry.

Dr. Dixit began the lecture by discussing the history and significance of paper as a medium for communication and documentation. He highlighted the various stages involved in the paper-making process, starting from the preparation of raw materials such as wood, bamboo, and recycled paper. He elaborated on the different methods of pulping, including mechanical, chemical, and semi-chemical pulping processes. He explained the importance of selecting the right pulp type for specific paper products and the role of chemicals in breaking down the lignin in the raw materials. Dr. Dixit also focused into the essential processes that follow pulping, such as bleaching, refining, and pressing, leading up to the drying stage, which is essential for achieving the desired quality of paper. He emphasized the need for innovation and technological advancements in improving efficiency and sustainability in the industry.

A guest lecture by Dr. A.K. Dixit was attended by 118 students from various semesters and programs, including B.Sc./ M.Sc. Forestry and B.Sc. Agriculture. The lecture provided a valuable learning experience, offering insights into the pulp and paper industry. Students gained a deeper understanding of the industry, including the understanding of paper, different pulping methods, technological advances, and sustainability. They also learned about practical applications, industry challenges, and trends, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of the industry. Overall, the lecture was a great opportunity for students to learn from an expert and expand their knowledge in the field.
