Physiotherapy Services at the 38th National Games Uttarakhand
The Department of Physiotherapy played an integral role in supporting the 38th National Games Uttarakhand, held at Maharana Pratap Sports College and Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun from 28th January to 14th February 2025. A team of 40 MPT and BPT students, under the leadership of Dr. Deptee Warikoo and other faculty members, delivered vital services to athletes, focusing on injury prevention, management, rehabilitation, and performance enhancement.
Physiotherapy services were essential in maintaining athletes’ performance and preventing injuries throughout the event. The physiotherapy team provided personalized warm-up and cool-down routines, on-site injury assessments, and immediate treatment for any injuries like strains or sprains. By addressing physical discomfort right away, physiotherapists ensured that athletes could continue competing at their peak performance while also facilitating quicker recovery and reducing downtime. This comprehensive approach contributed to a positive experience for the athletes, helping them perform consistently throughout the games.
For the students, interacting with national-level athletes provided invaluable exposure. As volunteers or active participants in delivering physiotherapy services, they had the opportunity to observe firsthand the unique demands of elite sports and the specific rehabilitation needs of athletes. This interaction not only enhanced their technical knowledge but also helped them gain a deeper understanding of sports-specific physiotherapy, which is crucial for their future careers.
Furthermore, networking with professionals in sports physiotherapy, coaches, and sports organizations provided students with significant career opportunities. Engaging with experts in the field allowed students to build connections that could lead to potential job placements, mentorship, and professional growth, further enriching their educational experience.
The involvement of students in providing physiotherapy services at the 38th National Games Uttarakhand proved to be an enriching and formative experience. It offered them exposure to the practical demands of elite sports physiotherapy, while also fostering professional relationships and career advancement opportunities.
